Karen "Sue" Hoyt

Dr. Hoyt is an Emergency Nurse Practitioner (ENP) and works at St. Mary Medical Center in Long Beach, California. She is employed by Long Beach Emergency Medical Group, Inc. She was the former Director of the Masters Entry Program in Nursing (MEPN) at the University of San Diego (USD) until 2003.

Dr. Hoyt spearheaded The Delphi Study on Competencies for NPs in Emergency Care (published in the Journal of Emergency Nursing September 2010) and served as the ENA Representative to the group who published the Consensus Model for APRN Regulation in 2008. Dr. Hoyt expanded emergency care and developed the ENP role. She is the Past Chair of the NP Validation Committee at ENA.

Dr. Hoyt has 78 peer-reviewed publications on clinical practice,  research, and management /leadership  topics. In 2006, she established the first Advanced Emergency Nursing Journal, a peer reviewed journal with Lippincott, Williams, and Wilkins, a division of Wolters Kluwer.

Dr. Hoyt is also the Co-owner of EmergeED. She conceptualized and has implemented a 2-day course for training ENPs and a train-the-trainer course for NP faculty. She teaches a Minor Procedures Workshops for NPs/PAs across the country. As a consultant and educator, she has also written ENP continuing education programs. Her book with author Sheila Sanning Shea is the Emergency NP/PA Pocket Reference Guide (available on Amazon.com) and the NP/PA Pediatric Pocket Guides and the NP/PA Geriatric Pocket Guide will be available this fall.

Dr. Hoyt served as President of the Emergency Nurses Association in 1997. She was the first Chair of ENA's Trauma Committee and served as the Co-Editor of ENA's Trauma Nursing Core Course Provider (5th Ed) and Instructor Manuals (4th Ed). After her term as ENA President in 1997, she co-edited the Emergency Nursing Core Curriculum, the official core curriculum publication of ENA.

Dr. Hoyt also works part time for the Hoyt Law Firm on medical malpractice litigation and personal injury cases. She has served as a percipient witness, expert witness, and performed medical chart reviews for other law firms for the past 20 years.
